Back Pain? Just Exercise It Away!

Back Pain? Just Exercise It Away!

Do you suffer from back pain? I do at a times and I’m young :) and fit! And did you know that according to research and studies, nearly 80% of all Americans will experience some type of back pain in their lives.

Usually, the treatment for lower back pain is increasing your core strength to increase flexibility on muscles that are tight, which in turn provides better stabilization of the spine and also doing exercises to strengthen the muscles surrounding the spine.

Every muscle between the hips and shoulders are included – these muscles are referred to as the core muscles.  Back pain can be a result of muscle imbalances caused by any of these core muscles.  For example, if the back of your thighs are weaker than the front of your thighs, there will be an uneven pull on the front of your spinal column.

There are some great ways that you can integrate core strength training exercises into all of the exercises you perform, instead of doing just the traditional crunches and sit-ups.  One such way is by doing some deep breathing.

The tummy tuck and bridge lift can also help you to reduce back pain and strengthen the core muscles as well.  The tummy tuck exercise is a simple pelvic tilt that draws the abdominal muscles away from the floor.  To do a tummy tuck, simply lie face down on the floor and squeeze your glutes to strengthen your spine.

Instead of pressing into your thighs, you should reach your tailbone down towards your heels.  Perform 15 reps of each exercise and alternate them until you have completed a couple of sets.

For the bridge, place your feet on a bench or on the floor and scoop your pelvis upward. Your rib cage should stay low to reduce any irritationto your back muscles.  The bridge will help to relieve stress on your back and focus the muscle contractions into the glutes and the hamstrings.

Other exercises for lower back pain are the lumbar side stretch, hip flexor stretch, and calf stretches, as all three can help to alleviate pull on your spinal column.

  1. Great post Brenda. I was in the Army back in the early eighties (yeah, I’m old) and I began to have severe lower back pain. I thought something was seriously wrong but the Army doctors are very familiar with weak backs. Our daily routines and posture allow our surrounding muscle to weaken slightly thereby providing inadequate back support. The Army’s solution? Physical therapy and exercise. Today I sometimes feel the same problems in both shoulders. Mild exercise keeps these problems in check and the pain quickly disappears.

Friendly disclaimer: This is assuming there are no underlying medical injuries or disease. Only a doctor can determine that so get checked out first.

Hi Brian…yes, you’re so right – mild exercise certainly does help to keep most back pain in check.

Thanks for pointing out the “friendly disclaimer”. Something very important that I should have definitely added :) Yes, one should visit their doctor first to determine that there are no underlying problems.

Thanks for the information. Food and physical therapy are inter-dependent on each other as I think. If you take a healthy food in addition to your physical therapy then you can achieve a very good health. Drinking more water keeps your body away from dehydration. Soda is not always good for health.

Good article… but for some people, it’s best they see a doctor for the back problems as sometimes doing the wrong exercises can harm your back even more.

  8. Thanks a lot for helping to bring awareness to this issue. In my business, I am working many hours in front of my PC screen, and I get back pain frequently. I learned about several ways to fight back pain and therefore, I created my own blog to offer a reference for info and tips of how to ease back pain. I will pass the info onto some friends.

Hi Paloma…thank you! Glad you enjoyed this post. Sitting in front of a computer screen for many hours definitely can be a factor in back pain, just take breaks and exercise it away! (after checking with your doctor first)

  9. Lisa from Thermal Pack says:

I agree, mild exercise can really help with back pain. Rest can help but staying in bed in the same position, can actually make things worse.

Water, water, water! I have spinal arthritis (severe) and my right foot went numb. Then I read somewhere that drinking a lot of plain old water (8 cups a day minimum – more if you work out) plumps the disks between the vertebra. Needless to say, it worked! Except I get so sick of drinking water and running to the bathroom every hour, but there you are. You can’t have everything.

    • Brenda says:

So glad to hear that drinking water helped with your spinal arthritis! LOL – water, water, water. I know what you mean. I drink tons of water a day and sometimes have to take a break and drink something else, usually iced tea!
