Do You Exercise at the Gym or at Home?

The decision as to where you will exercise is an important step in reaching your fitness goals. There are many different factors and pros and cons to each one. However once you decide where you are going to exercise, you’ll then be able to come up with your work out plan.

As I’m sure you know, exercising at home has many advantages, especially in the money department! Gym memberships can be quite expensive at times and also may include things that you don’t need or won’t use depending on your work out plan, i.e. daycare or use of the swimming pool. You also don’t need to be too concerned with the latest exercise gadgets and trends that surface at the gym because you will have your own exercise routine at home.

It’s certainly obvious that by exercising at home you can save money on gas and wear and tear on your vehicle because you won’t need to go anywhere to exercise! As well as saving money, exercising at home can be helpful to those who don’t like to work out in public. You won’t have to worry about what to wear, about what you look like, etc… because you are the only person at home with you. You also don’t need to worry about the time…how much time you get to spend on a certain piece of equipment or who is waiting behind you – I’m sure we’ve all been there.

There are of course some expenses you will still have to incur even if you decide to work out at home. Let’s say you plan to add some kind of power walking or even running into your exercise routine, you would definitely have to have good high quality shoes or sneakers. You would also be spending money on any type of equipment you plan on incorporating into your routine.

On the other hand now, many people are motivated by working out with others or being around people you know and the gym would definitely be the better idea in this case. And of course, you’ll also have a much larger selection of equipment at the gym than what you would have at home.

By exercising at the gym, you’ll also have access to much bigger equipment that you won’t have at home. For example, if you plan on swimming as a form of exercise, you’d definitely want to work out at the gym. Swimming by the way is great exercise for your muscles and cardio!

Gyms also have many different types of classes that you can take and have personalized training programs that you work on with a fitness trainer motivating you all the way.

Deciding whether to exercise at home or at the gym is a completely personal decision and is one that you should make based on your own goals and personal preferences. What it comes down to is the amount of money you want to spend and/or which environment you want to be in and which one will help you best to achieve your life fitness goals. And of course, if your first choice isn’t working out for some reason, you can always make the switch. Most important – have fun!

I have tried both. In my opinion, gym is a good place for effective workout because it has a very complete set of equipments for different workout. However, the price might not be something many people wanted to pay for a long term. After exercising in the gym for a year, I decided to exercise from home- the free way. I feel that it is natural that way and I could get more oxygen while exercising compare to a room full of air-cons.

I think that this question is answered by the type of person you are. I am 38 years of age now and in my 20′s I sed to play football at least 4 times a week yet I hated going to the gym and so never did! However now that I don’t play football in order to stay fit I have decided to slowly build up a set of home gym equipment as I prefer to exercise by my self!

I gave up my gym membership long ago. Not because I didn’t like going, mainly because of the economy and I had to make cuts. I liked going, but frankly, I can do most of the same stuff at my house. I have a weight bench in my garage and take my dogs for walks at least once a day. It helps me stay in shape, without draining my wallet.

My wife just bought an exercise video with Valerie Bertinelli and tomorrow morning we exercise together watching the DVD. It’s hard to do things like that at the gym.

Hi Brian…so how was exercising to the dvd? :) Stuff like that is definitely better done at home, I agree! So after the Super Bowl tonight, and all those wings… I guess you’ll be exercising again, bright and early! :0

  7. I have been strength training for a long time with the TRX and obtaining superb results. However, I think it could be time to add in some cardio or more specifically, some interval training. Does anyone have any good interval workouts they can share or can somebody point me to a website that can? Cheers.

To keep yourself in shape, it really doesn’t matter whether you exercise in a gym or at home. What matters is how much are you dedicated to your exercise regime. There are many people who waste loads of money by paying fees at gyms but seldom go to exercise. I hope you get the point!

I love to work out at home. I can crank my music that I like to hear and don’t have to drive somewhere and pay to get healthy. I’m all for slowly building a collection of exercise gear: first a Pilates ball, then some dumbells, you know? Most exercises can be done at home and replicated cheaply.

  13. Okay, when it comes to weight training I’m at the gym big time. I’ve had some home equipment in the past, but I find it’s the gym atmosphere that picks me up and gets me going (especially that I exercise right after work – just imagine the temptation to take a nap at that time!)

I dont like to be disturbed when I am working out and so I prefer to workout in the comfort and privacy of my own home. I also get to watch my favourite series whilst running on the treadmill.

I am very active but broke the bone which holds my cruciate ligament in my right knee. This means I am out of action for at least 7 weeks with no weight bearing on my right foot. I am hoping I can get access to a turbo trainer which means I can use my road bike whilst staying stationary. To all those who can run skip and jump get out there!!!

I prefer gym because you can have professional and personal assistance there which would help you a lot, when you are doing exercise at home its necessary that you need to be very well informed about the workouts you want to do. Sticking to a particular plan which is suggested by professionals will help a lot when you exercise at home.

Hey, I work out at home and I much prefer it to the gym. Im a mother of 3 and I just find it so much easier to find time at home than make the effort to get to the gym. I stay motivated easily because my husband works out with me…

  21. I’ve just started a training program which I bought as an iPhone App – its called “200 situps” and I do it 3 times a week. Its great because I can do it from my own home and it really doesn’t take long at all!

    Hey Brenda,
I think if you want to get the best results in physical training regime its really vital to record results. I’ve been running marathons for over 15 years now and I find that when I really want to step up a notch, I do it by monitoring my results…and then working on my weaknesses.

  23. I will prefer to exercise at home with my family. We can do it all together at low cost and them we can have our bonding at the same time. We can do it on gym though but it is much easier to be feeling at home and then train ourselves. We just need to set our own records and programs.

  24. really! I just find it so much easier to find time at home than make the effort to get to the gym. I stay motivated easily because my husband works out with me..
